The Canadian government has announced that, as of 30 October, no one over the age of 12, Canadian or otherwise, will be allowed to leave the country by air unless they have completed a full course of coronavirus vaccination.
On Wednesday 6 October, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland confirmed the August announcement that air travellers departing Canada must be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The measure also affects passengers on certain railways and those travelling by ship for more than 24 hours, as detailed in a Transport Canada press release: “As of 30 October, air passengers departing from Canadian airports, passengers on VIA Rail and Rocky Mountaineer trains, and passengers on passenger ships engaged in non-core activities and on trips of 24 hours or more, such as cruises, will be required to be vaccinated.
“The vaccination requirements will apply to all travellers 12 years of age and older who are air passengers on domestic, cross-border or international flights departing from a Canadian airport,” the document states, meaning non-Canadians will also be subject to the measure.
Since early September, only tourists vaccinated against the coronavirus have been able to enter Canada, but temporary workers and foreign students who had not received two doses of Canadian-recognised vaccines could enter the country, subject to screening tests and a 14-day quarantine. These unvaccinated persons will not be allowed to leave Canada after the new regulations come into force.
However, the Canadian government specifies that for travellers who are in the process of being vaccinated, “there will be a brief transition period during which they may travel if they present a valid Covid-19 molecular test performed within 72 hours prior to travel”. The transition period ends on November 30.
