The Chinese government is to end the ‘zero covid’ policy.

The popular protests have triumphed again.

Rumours began to spread in China last night that the government is to end the “zero covid” policy and the unbearable restrictions and confinement it entails.

This was stated by Hu Xijin, former editor of the Global Times newspaper, who is considered very close to the Beijing government and very well informed about the trade war between China and the US.

The Chinese government has a good excuse on its hands: official data indicate that daily “new infections” with “covid” have dropped for the first time in more than a week.

The current rate of “serious cases” in China is only about 0.025 per cent, the Chinese journalist notes. Most Chinese are no longer afraid of being infected and China may emerge from the ominous shadow of the pandemic “sooner rather than later”, he writes.

“I can make an absolute prediction: China will not become chaotic and out of control,” he says. With the relaxation of epidemic prevention and control measures, “public sentiment will soon calm down”.

Speculation about an imminent relaxation of health restrictions in China was fuelled by the announcement of a press conference by the State Council’s Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism, scheduled for 7am this morning.

Last night the massive police presence in China prevented further protests from breaking out.
