On Monday last week the British government confirmed that, along with a squadron of Challenger 2 battle tanks, it will also send to Ukraine “munitions, including armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium.”
Such munitions are used to pierce the armor of the most modern tanks, but are highly toxic. If inhaled or if it comes into contact with the skin, it causes serious illnesses, as happened in Iraq or in the Balkan War.
Shortly after the announcement, Putin threatened to respond to the delivery of this weaponry. “Today we learned that the UK announced not only the delivery of tanks to Ukraine, but also howitzers with depleted uranium […] If this happens, Russia will be forced to respond,” he said. “It seems that the West has really decided to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian, not with words, but with actions.”
The manufacture of anti-tank shells can be done in two ways: either with tungsten, or with an alloy of depleted uranium and titanium. The latter is much cheaper because nuclear reactor fuel can be used.
Western countries should understand what game they are “playing”. Russia has clearly defined this type of ammunition as “dirty bombs”, which opens the possibility for its army to carry out a retaliatory attack with tactical nuclear weapons to destroy the Challenger 2 tanks to be sent by the London government.
By common agreement, Russia is going to install nuclear weapons in Belarus, Putin said in an interview on Rossiya 24 TV channel. The reason for such a move is the UK statement on the supply of depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine.
In 1999 NATO dropped about 10 tons of depleted uranium ammunition on Yugoslavia. The U.S. military also used them in 1991 and 2003 in Iraq.
Before the NATO bombings, Serbia did not have such a high number of cancer cases. In Iraq, where traces of radioactive ammunition dropped by aircraft have been found in the deserts, children are now suffering from strange diseases.
