Under the leadership of Yossi Cohen, the Mossad threatened the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, to stop her investigation into Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinian population.
The revelations of the British newspaper The Guardian (*) show that the Israelis are ready to do anything to evade any international supervision of their massacres.The head of Mossad, Yossi Cohen, made a series of threats against Bensouda when she was a prosecutor at the International Criminal Court.In secret meetings, he tried to persuade her to drop an investigation into war crimes in Palestine.
Mossad’s attempts to compromise Bensouda are part of a nearly decade-long strategy to weaken the International Criminal Court. Yossi Cohen, then head of Mossad, played a central role in this operation.
Cohen, dubbed Netanyahu’s “unofficial messenger,” used various tactics to influence Bensouda.He told her, “You should help us and let us take care of you. You should not engage in activities that could compromise your security or that of your family.”
The Mossad even obtained secret recordings from Bensouda’s husband in an attempt to discredit her.
Recently Bensouda’s successor, Karim Khan, stepped up the investigation and requested arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, Israel’s defense minister. He warned that he would not hesitate to pursue “attempts to obstruct, intimidate or unduly influence” the judges of the International Criminal Court.
For its part, the Tribunal has issued a press release denouncing the threats of reprisals to which it was subjected. According to the Office of the Prosecutor, the threats were aimed at compromising the independence and impartiality of the Tribunal.
Mossad’s actions constitute crimes against the administration of justice, according to Article 70 of the Rome Statute, the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court. Israel’s threats and manipulations escalate tensions between Israel and the Tribunal, marking a crucial step in the investigation of Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinians.
