Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Sunday it would look into allegations that the Ukrainian Red Cross was involved in suspicious activities, including keeping records of children with “healthy organs” in the city of Mariupol.
The accusation was made by Vladimir Taranenko, leader of the Donetsk-based organisation Peoples Retinue, a solidarity movement that has as one of its aims to help the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Taranenko posted on social media a video of what she called a search of the Red Cross office in Mariupol and said that some of the evidence found there puts her in a very suspicious light.
The office had medical records for more than 1,000 children, but they were marked as “healthy organs” rather than any medical condition or procedure.
Taranenko also claimed that some of the reading material found in the office was instructions on “how to use weapons, even in a format intended for children”.
The video shows at least one manual of a military nature. It was a hard copy of “Practical Military Ordnance Identification” by Thomas Gersbeck, a retired Marine Corps explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technician. The book is a field manual on how to identify unexploded ordnance and handle it safely.
Taranenko said the Donetsk People’s Republic investigation would “shed light” on the institution’s activities. The Russian committee said it would add the video to a list of evidence it already has on crimes committed by Kiev.
Mariupol is a large port city in what the Donetsk People’s Republic claims as its sovereign territory. It was captured by Russian and People’s Republic forces during the ongoing military offensive against Ukraine.
