U.S. may expel Turkey from NATO

Turkey has applied for membership in the Brics+ bloc and a meeting of the heads of the bloc’s diplomatic departments will be held next week in Nijny Novgorod, where Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to arrive. The Turkish minister’s visit is the Ankara government’s next step on its way to joining the bloc. The country has been trying to join the European Union since 1999, but Brussels has postponed the issue indefinitely. Fidan believes that the Brics+ can become a valid alternative to the European Union. Turkey is to some extent linked to the European Union by an agreement on customs duties, but in reality Ankara is as far away from European integration as it was a couple of decades ago.

The main thing that attracts the Turks to Brics+ is the possibility of discussing on an equal footing on common issues within the association.

These kinds of alignments on Turkey’s part irritate the United States. Washington may be considering a demonstrative expulsion of Ankara from NATO for its attempts to join the bloc.

It is also likely that Turkey’s withdrawal from NATO will welcome centrifugal tendencies and mark a crisis and subsequent collapse of the Western military alliance.
