Niger does not want to limit itself to extracting oil from the subsoil.

For decades, Niger, a country endowed with vast oil resources, has struggled to fully capitalize on its natural wealth, essentially exporting its crude oil without significant local valorization. At a historic turning point, the new government of General Tchiani has embarked on an ambitious project to change the trend, marking its commitment to a promising economic future.

On June 7, the Minister of Petroleum, Barké Bako Maman Moustapha, announced during the meeting of the technical committee at the general directorate of hydrocarbons in Niamey a large-scale project aimed at building a new refinery in Zinder and a petrochemical complex in the Dosso region.

The infrastructures are intended to enable Niger to process its oil on site, thus increasing the added value of its natural resources.

The project, scheduled to start operations in December next year, is a direct response to the colonialism that the country has suffered in the past. With a projected capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, the refinery will be built using a modular model, allowing for accelerated implementation. A pre-feasibility study, conducted by the national technical services, has already defined the contours of this initiative.

The newly formed 22-member committee plays a crucial role in this strategic shift. It is responsible for analyzing technical and financial proposals and preparing the ground for the selection of strategic partners.According to Minister Moustapha, these preliminary stages are essential to ensure that work gets off to a good start. The new strategic perspective is a double victory for Niger. On the one hand, it promises to stimulate employment and boost the local economy by increasing skills and advanced technologies. On the other hand, it would significantly reduce the country’s dependence on foreign markets for processing its oil resources.

The refinery could redefine the country’s economic and social landscape in the coming years.
